Description

Beautifully embroidered Border Reiver patch. The Northumbria-Scottish borders were home to the Reivers, a lawless area that become known as the Debatable Lands. Here clan and family loyalty was held above all other allegiances and the rule of law and power of Kings but a distant rumour. In 1525 the Archbishop of Edinburgh was so incensed by the criminal activities of the Reivers that he cursed the riding families and their descendants to perpetual damnation in pits of Hell. The Reiver clans cared not and continued with their business as usual.
